Choosing a Lawyer
Abraham Lincoln said, "A lawyer's time and advice are his stock in trade". More than one hundred and fifty years later, this description remains valid. Quality legal services, as well as good results, require both time and advice.
One way to select a lawyer is by referral of a satisfied client, although no two cases are the same, and the fact that the referring client's case was successful is no guarantee that yours will be.
Another way clients select lawyers is through advertisements, published articles, legal directories, such as Martindale-Hubbell (where biographical information is published and updated), internet websites, or other information published by the lawyer in search of clients.
Clearly, there are many ways to select a lawyer. Before hiring a lawyer, visit the lawyer's office---most do not charge for an initial consultation (others charge a minimum fee)---and ask about the lawyer's training and experience in the profession. You then should have the information to decide whether the lawyer sounds knowledgeable, intelligent, patient and understanding, precise, or whatever qualities you expect in your lawyer.

Do you really need a lawyer?
Most of us have heard it said that a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client. This is not restricted to lawyers, however, since the point is that if we are too close to the issues at hand, we are unable to get the proper perspective. People are often exposed to legal-type kits from which they can prepare certain documents, such as a will, power of attorney, or a lease. If one is thinking about using one of these documents, be sure and read the various disclaimers that are often included. Most come with recommendations that before one uses the form that they should consult with an attorney. That seems to be the wise choice.
Please visit our Links page, where, we offer a basic will, power of attorney, and lease for a free download. Review the usual disclaimers associated with these documents. Download some of the wills of the rich and famous on the Links page. Note Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Burger's will. He wrote it out himself in 176 words. Apparently, he should have consulted a lawyer!
Remember, the engagement of a lawyer is an important decision. You should hire a lawyer with expertise in your type of case or legal matter.
